Dr. Michael Wenzel
Ever since I bought my first dental microscope from a mentor in 2016, I’ve been deeply drawn to what this technology makes possible. The fact that a single piece of equipment can improve how we see, how we work, and how we document dentistry still feels remarkable to me.
I also work professionally as a videographer, and that parallel passion for visual storytelling led me to create Michael the Dentist, a YouTube channel that eventually grew to more than 125,000 subscribers. Showing what is possible under the microscope has been incredibly rewarding, but what matters even more to me is the ripple effect: seeing more dentists confidently document and share their own work through their own scopes. While I've led hands-on dental microscope training multiple times since April of 2017, I believe a premium online experience is what will truly accelerate the dental microscope movement.
My hope with Master the Microscope is not only to make dentistry more comfortable and enjoyable for you, but also to give you the tools and confidence to present your work at a higher level. The more dentists who can see clearly, work with greater precision, and share thoughtfully, the faster the standard of restorative dentistry can rise.

Interview the Instructor
What's the best Continuing Education Program you've ever attended?
"The Kois Curriculum in Seattle, Washington is incredible. I'm now a graduate of the program and I can't recommend John Kois and his curriculum enough."
What's your most used dental bur?
"The KS1 Long without a doubt"
Do you wear scrubs or dress clothes to work?
"Neither. Lululemon T-shirts every day. Try them. They will change your life."

What's one thing you don't want us to know about you?
"I love League of Legends... I play Qiyana mid."
Are you a lone wolf or a family man?
"I'm a proud father of two young children and husband to my lovely wife Natalia. She's the reason this website looks so good, by the way - she designed it from the ground up!"
Where are you located?
"I'm located just outside of Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies, and we absolutely love it here - there are lots of opportunities for mountain biking, hiking and skiing."
What does an ideal day of dentistry look like for you?
"I love bread and butter restorative dentistry. While I've trained at the Kois Center to take on bigger cases, some of my favourite days are filled with back to back fillings and crown preps. I think a lot of that is because I work so comfortably through the scope and never struggle to see."
How long did it take you to master the microscope?
"Good question. Before I started making this course, I would have given you a straight answer. After I finished the production of the course, I was shocked to realize how much I had actually changed my workflow over a relatively short period of time. It made me realize that mastery isn't an end point, but an ongoing pursuit- you can always get better! To give you a more useful answer, I was doing basic restorative on the upper arch the very first week with my scope in 2016. Within a month, it felt pretty natural. The lower arch took a little longer, especially given that I was convinced the mouth mirror was the key to long term success. Luckily, with proper training (and a good attitude), I expect you'll be up to speed with the scope much faster than myself!"

What do you think of the state of dentistry?
"I think absolutely wild things are happening with the advent of AI and new digital technologies. However, I think there are some massive untapped opportunities in the education space. The microscope has the unique power to allow the world to see through the eyes of the dentist - that is, EXACTLY what the dentist sees. I can only imagine what would be possible if implant or third molar surgeons mastered the microscope. A new realm of accessible education would be unlocked... and I think that's on the horizon, so I'm pretty excited about it."
